How many testers does Google Play Closed Testing require?
Google Play shows the exact number inside Play Console when you publish your first closed test. For most accounts it says: recruit at least 12 testers, and they must stay opted in for 14 consecutive days. This guide explains what that number means and how to reach it without losing days.
The requirement in one line
At least 12 testers must opt in to your closed test, install your app from the testing link, and remain opted in for 14 continuous days. If a tester opts out, or the 14-day window is interrupted, the counter restarts.

Why some accounts show 20 testers
Google has changed this requirement several times, and it varies by account type and when the account was created. Personal accounts created after November 2023 are sometimes asked for 20 testers instead of 12. Always trust the exact wording in your own Play Console — that is the number Google will check when you apply for production access.
What counts as a tester (and what breaks the count)
- The tester opts in through your testing link or Google Group and installs the app from Google Play
- They keep the app installed and use it during the testing period
- Opting out — even on the last day — removes them from the count
- Emulators, cloned accounts and repeated installs from one device are detected and do not count
How to fill the requirement fast
